Design Tips

Mary Rudakas

  • I prefer using glue instead of tape for putting the box pieces together.  That way you can adjust the pieces and slide them around before the glue dries.
  • Use paper from all one stack or collection to make matching a breeze.
  • Use thick cardstock for the box so it's nice and sturdy.
  • Use different reds for the poinsettia to accentuate the layers.  You can even emboss a few of the layers.  To emboss a bottom layer, you can cut one of the petals off so it fits in your embossing folder and then glue it all back together when assembling.  To cut the various shapes on various papers, select petals1.svg and/or petals2.svg on your virtual mat in SCAL and go to Object --> Break Apart.  Then you can move the pieces around on your mat and cut on different papers.  Just be sure they're sized properly before breaking apart.
  • Double-sided tape works great for affixing ribbon to paper.  That way the glue doesn't show through or stain the ribbon.  Just make sure you have enough ribbon before you begin affixing or you might not have enough like I did!

I hope you get some use out of these big boxes this holiday season!  ~Mary  :)
