Cricut CraftRoom and SCAL

Yes, you can use SCAL and CraftRoom after updating your firmware!

Provo Craft (the makers of the Cricut) recently finalized and released their new Cricut CraftRoom software. Based on customer feedback, as well as our own tests, we’ve discovered that a firmware update is required in order to use the new CraftRoom. In the email below, a Provo Craft representative states that updating the Cricut’s firmware will prevent users from using their machines with Sure Cuts A Lot software.

Update 2/6/2013: This article was published over 12 months ago and it is possible that updating to the latest firmware can result in losing the ability to use SCAL. We no longer test Cricut firmware so we cannot confirm that this information is accurate with the latest firmware updates from Cricut.

The new Cricut CraftRoom comes in two flavors. The online version ONLY allows you to design and save files and does not allow you to cut. You’ll need to install the LOCAL version of CraftRoom in order to cut.

The first time we ran the new Cricut CraftRoom, the program informed us that our Cricut Expression would need to be updated from version 2.34 to 2.43 (our Cricut Personal also required updating) The firmware update took about 15 minutes to complete. Below is a screenshot of the process.

To our surprise, both the Cricut Expression and the Cricut Personal still worked with Sure Cuts A Lot version 2.044 despite Provo Craft saying otherwise.

Is it possible that Provo Craft can block you from using Sure Cuts A Lot with a future firmware update? Yes, from a technical standpoint, it is. Would they do that? We really cannot say. Our guess is that they wouldn’t as it would lead to a HUGE amount of complaints!

Check out the video below and see it for yourself!

Interesting!  Thank you for experimenting for the rest of us that have too much at stake to do it.

I bought a new baby bug (came with a gypsy for a GREAT price!)  I was apprehensive, but went ahead and connected it to the CCR.  It worked, and SCAL2 still works on my E.

I use my E for my crafting business, am apprehensive to connect it to craft room… but the E works with SCAL and the baby works with CCR.  yeah!

is there a reason to update if we are not using the cricut craftroom software? I usually only use SCAL . Possibly sometimes my Design Studio but i haven’t used that in so long that when i turned it on the other day i had forgotten what to do. Turned it off and went straight back to SCAL. My E is V 2.34 – should i update.?
Thanks . you guys are great.

If you don’t use CraftRoom, you don’t need to update!

Interesting!  Thank you for experimenting for the rest of us that have too much to lose.

  6. Kim T November 22, 2011 at 10:13 am #

That is brilliant, thanks for trying it.

I have been putting off updating the firmware or connecting to the craft room just in case it wouldn’t let me use SCAL 2 any more and that would be disastrous lol.

Is there another version besides the 2.43? I’ve been using the version for some time now..

  8. Amy Lewinson November 22, 2011 at 10:46 am #

I’m running version 2.43… Is there a newer update that just came out?

    Thanks..

    • Anonymous November 22, 2011 at 10:56 am #

      Nope, that’s the latest!

  9. KimberlyRae November 22, 2011 at 10:51 am #

Are you saying you had to have CraftRoom software installed first  [...gawd knows how much more PC grabbed the consumers pocket book on this one] then SCAL Still worked for you on your expression and create machines…that’s HUGE!
Is this is ONLY temporary?…PC is a company that thrives on Monopoly and will only be a matter of time before their software engineers figure out how to squash this coolness!!

    • Anonymous November 22, 2011 at 10:56 am #

Not sure if this will change. It might!

  10. Wanda Hornung November 22, 2011 at 10:52 am #

Ok, so waht is the difference between SCAL and SCAL 2?  I only have the 1.  Afraid that if I updated to 2 then my E wouldnt work. If I understand correctly if I update my E to the latest firmware it will still work with SCAL.  Right?

    Thanks in advance :-)

    • Anonymous November 22, 2011 at 10:55 am #

SCAL 2 is no longer available, Wanda. Sorry about that. The differences are pretty drastic as SCAL 2 has more features!

      • Wanda Hornung November 23, 2011 at 5:42 am #

I have SCAL 2.  However, I was afraid to bump it up bc I didnt know if my E would work.  I will have to check out the new version.

I’ve been wanting to purchase SCAL but hadn’t because I heard it wouldn’t work with my Expression and I’m now ADDICTED to the CCR.  I was very excited to see this post and went to purchase SCAL but only see SCAL 3 and not SCAL 2.  Does SCAL 3 not work with cricut machines? How can I get SCAL 2 then?

  11. Kami M November 22, 2011 at 10:55 am #

for those that have issues with SCAL working after the update, make sure that CCR is shut down fully.  I heard others say they couldn’t get SCAL to work after they did the update from CCR, until they realized they still had CCR opened.  When they shut it down, they were able to use SCAL again.

    • emsan September 15, 2012 at 7:35 am #

is this applicable to scal 3 as well? i currently run scal 1.016.

  12. Janet Baldwin November 22, 2011 at 11:58 am #

Great news Leo! Thanks for the information – I haven’t updated my firmware on the Cricut because I thought it would not work again with SCAL!

  13. Mary November 22, 2011 at 12:01 pm #

Why is it you can use scal software and not mtc.  If I buy scal software can I still cut svg designs with my cricut

    • Kroudabush November 22, 2011 at 3:21 pm #

You would have to get SCAL 2 for it to work.

  14. Gamma4522 November 22, 2011 at 2:50 pm #

Cricut just sent down a new update today 1.61

  15. Sandy Sommerfeld November 22, 2011 at 5:44 pm #

okay I’m totally confused now…   I have Cricut Baby Bug (personal) and it is updated to Cricut V1.34.
I use SCAL 2 and it cuts just dandy.
Now do I need to update SCAL 2 to SCAL 3?  I thought the SCAL 3 wouldn’t work with Cricut or the CCR.
Can SCAl read the CCR files … I’m sorry that I’m so daft on all of this…

Thanks Leo & Mary for your awesome site & thanks for answering my confusion….

  16. Karen November 22, 2011 at 8:53 pm #

Good to know I have my expression for Scal2 and my E2 for the CCR I have been afraid to update the one I use with SCAL2 that I would mess it up. I think I may have to change machines its too much for carts anyway and with SVGCUTS I am never without a great file!!!!!!!

I*m nervious, so I*m not going to update mine. I would hate to loose all my great SVgs from SVG cuts, and prevent me from getting more. Thanks for the information. :) We so appreciate you a lot! Lola :)

  18. Harriswl November 23, 2011 at 8:40 pm #

Super cool! I’ve avoided the CCR this whole time!

  19. Rachel Patton November 23, 2011 at 10:29 pm #

Thanks for testing for us.  I might have to try it.

  20. Aimee7111 November 26, 2011 at 4:55 am #

So if I install Design Studio, I can use my Expression with SCAL 3?

  21. Cindyjeff November 26, 2011 at 10:38 am #

Yikes, I updated to Cricut Firmware version 2.43 but do not have Sure Cuts A Lot 2.044:(  It will not cut with Sure Cuts A Lot v. 2.038 which is what I have.  Any way for me to upgrade Sure Cuts a lot to 2.044????  Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide!!!

    • Ktlkilgore November 29, 2011 at 4:23 pm #

I have the same problem.  I need SCAL v. 2.43.   I can’t get my cricut to cut with SCAL v. 2.030 now that I’ve updated my firmware to 2.43 :-(

  22. Kathryn Brenner November 26, 2011 at 11:54 am #

So, if I read the above correctly, you updated the firmware on an expression to PC’s recommended most recent to run Craft Room locally, and you were still able to run SCAL (the last pre-suit version) with no issues? That is AWESOME.  I d/l craft room the other day but stopped short of installing and updating Cricut f/w because I didn’t want to lose the use of SCAL and MTC.  I really hope the folks at Provocraft at least let us keep this little bit of pleasure.

  23. Jennifer Lobisser November 26, 2011 at 1:48 pm #

I was able to cut from the Craftroom WITHOUT updating the firmware!

    • Scrappindeb November 28, 2011 at 6:48 am #

Jennifer, what did you do?  Just download the CricutRoom and install?  And then started cutting from it?  That is awesome.  I’m really hestitant about updating the firmware.

  24. Scrappindeb November 27, 2011 at 12:27 pm #

If I want to be able to use it from anywhere I think I understand I would do the WEB version, but do I also need to install the Desktop version?  I guess what I’m asking is do I need to download both versions?

  25. Scrappindeb November 28, 2011 at 6:45 am #

Please disregard my previous comment, I figured it out.

  26. Susan November 30, 2011 at 7:45 am #

I just received a Cricut Mini as a gift and so I want to use CCR as this machine was apparently designed for this purpose.  Here is my question….If I install the CCR on my pc will it do anything to my pc (personal computer) that will disable SCAL?  I have an Expression and so I believe that I can just use the new Mini for the CCR and still use my E for SCAL.  I’m just worried that installing CCR will do something to my pc that would then disable either my SCAL program or my E.

    • Tiffan October 4, 2012 at 12:26 pm #

so is there an scal version you could use for the cricut mini?

      • SVGCuts October 9, 2012 at 12:37 pm #

There is no version of Sure Cuts a Lot for the mini. Sorry about that.

        • Amy January 28, 2013 at 11:13 am #

Hi! Will SCAL 2 work with Cricut Create version 1.50? Thank you!

  27. Melody Lloyd Malpas December 27, 2011 at 9:44 am #

I just received a Cricut with Gypsy. I want to use SCAL with my Cricut, but am not sure how to get it to work. If I buy SCAL3 will it work, or is this article saying that I need to locate an older version of SCAL? Also, do I need to install SCAL BEFORE CCR?

  28. Julie December 30, 2011 at 9:17 pm #

I just loaded Cricut Craft Room onto my laptop and ran the update…getting an error message and cannot use my SCAL2 with my Cricut now.  Can you help?

    • Charity January 3, 2012 at 4:04 pm #

Was svgcuts able to help you get SCAL2 back onto your computer and fix the problem…just curious because I have SCAL2 2.030 and really don’t want to screw things up..

  29. AzAnna January 5, 2012 at 4:39 am #

This is very good to know, BUT… my SCAL is on 2.38 – the version available on your website is 3.0, which likely does not work with Cricut. So… I’m stuck, but can still use SCAL with CCR?? That IS good news! Thanks!!!

  30. Elizabeth P January 5, 2012 at 7:06 pm #

My input would be that if you get SCAL to work with CCR, and anything happens to your machine, using software other than what is intended for the Cricut will void its warranty. PC didn’t want SCAL or MTC to work with PC machines, hence the settlement a year or so ago, and all the business of if I do this, can I still do that……

They make their money based on people buying and using Cricut Machines, products, carts….ALL Cricut and all PC.

  31. Anonymous January 8, 2012 at 4:53 pm #

I just went through trying to figure out if I should/have to upgrade our Cricut Expression’s firmware to use with Cricut CraftRoom.

Cricuct CraftRoom (as of January 2012) wants to upgrade the Cricut Expression firmware to version 2.43.
SCAL 2 verision 2.044 will work with this version of the firmware. I cannot say whether earlier versions will or won’t; there are reports that earlier versions do not.

SCAL only lets you choose firmware version up to 2.3x when you go to cut. Just choose 2.3x.

    I hope this helps.

I recently upgraded the Cricut Expression firmware 2.43 and could not use Sure Cuts A Lot anymore.  Through a few searches I found out that I need to upgrade Sure Cuts A Lot to version 2.044, long story short to upgrade I went to their website and click Downloads and then clicked “Support Downloads” to get the current version.  After that I kept receiving the error that it could not find the Cricut, until I did this.

Goto Cutter tab -> click Advanced -> Click Calibrate Cricut -> Test Cut -> Choose Mat Size -> Click Do Test Cut

    • Eva December 4, 2012 at 2:04 am #

Hi! Can you help me, please? Where is this webside? I don’t know where I can make this. (Where is : cutter tab, advanced, calibrate cricut… ???) Thank you very-very much!!! Eva from Hungary

Where is that tab?? I don’t have an advanced option!! I am having the same issues! SCAL2 version 2.030 and updated to 2.34! And it’s not working!!

      HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous April 14, 2012 at 7:36 am #

No, SCAL 3 will not work with the Cricut and you won’t be able to roll it back. Sorry about that.

Hi, I have a question, I have an older Expression v 2.1 year 2006, I have the opportunity to buy a second hand Sure Cuts A Lot 2 and unsure whether I should invest the money ($150) or if it will even work on my Expression. Any thoughts or advice would be VERY appreciated!

Yes, if you have an original Cricut, it will work with Sure Cuts A Lot 2

Does anyone know if the updated firmware (2.43) will work with SCAL version 2.005? I’m afraid it is too old and won’t work. I don’t know what to do.

Close Sure Cuts A Lot and re-open it, but just before you double-click to open it, press and hold the letter “D” on your keyboard. If asked to restore defaults, click yes! Then try it again!

I’m afraid to try but it won’t let me use my new Close to My Heart cartridges without the update. Odd, I used the Art Philosophy many times but today I can’t without the update. Here goes…..HOORAY!! I updated to 2.43 and SCAL still works!!! I am so relieved!

  41. Gloria September 17, 2012 at 8:51 pm #

Is this still true with all the updates that have been done with CCR. I have the Cricut Expression and Imagine. I know SCAL doesn’t work with the Imagine but neither does CCR. I really like CCR for use with all the carts that I have but am not willing to loose my ability to use SCAL as I totally love it and would be heart broken if I was blocked from using it. Thanks for any info you might offer.

    • SVGCuts September 18, 2012 at 7:28 am #

      Yes, it’s true!

      • Gloria September 18, 2012 at 10:10 am #

Oh my Gosh all this time I have been so afraid of trying ccr with my expression for fear I would lose my scal and the fear was all for nothing!!! I have tried it and wowza!! Thank you so so so so much!!!! Now it would be pure bliss if the imagine would start to work also but can’t have it all I guess.

  42. Alex K September 22, 2012 at 10:39 am #

I just wanted to post a quick note for those still debating whether to upgrade or not. I have a mac, SCAL2 version 2.030 and craft room for my Cricut Expression. I did not upgrade my firmware, so I still have 2.34. I DID NOT HAVE TO UPGRADE to 2.43 in order to use Craft room. All you need to do is SKIP upgrade each time you start craft room and it will still let you cut using your cricut cartridges.

  43. CORRINE September 28, 2012 at 9:34 am #

I just updated my Expression from 2.31 to 2.43 after months of hesitation. My husband told me to take the chance so I did. Thankfully my SCAL 2.003 still works. Yay! I tested both CCR and SCAL and they both are working, of course I made sure that only one was running at a time though. Hopes this helps others!

    Hi:

I purchased SCAL a few years ago and installed it on my computer. I was about to use it when I realized my Cricut Expression no longer works. If i purchase a new expression will it work with SCAL. I see plenty on sale on ebay and even provo craft is still selling the expression. Some one told me they had a cricut expression for sale and the firmware was 2.0.

    Help Please

    Thanks

    • SVGCuts October 20, 2012 at 12:30 pm #

Yes, it should work! As long as its the original Expression!

  47. Jennifer October 23, 2012 at 5:20 pm #

When I purchased SCAL1 I got a physical disk to load on the computer – when upgraded to SCAL 2 it was just an on line download. The computer that had my SCAL 2 program crashed. When I went up to SCAL site, they no longer support SCAL 2.????? Does anyone know how I can dowload the sofware for SCAL2? I’d hate to think that I have all of these files for SCAL 2 that are useless b/c SCAL 1 cannot read/cut them. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

  48. Sarah November 11, 2012 at 8:08 am #

Anyone know for certain whether a new 3.0 scal serial number would work on 2.0 scal software? Could you go ahead and buy if you could find a copy of the older version?

  51. Jamie December 6, 2012 at 5:36 pm #

I hope someone can help me… I have a circut personal, I downloaded craft room today and it updated the firmware from version 1.1 to version 1.45. I can cut from craft room with no problem. I then downloaded a trial version of Make The Cut, my circut starts the cut and then freezes and the program shuts off.
Is there any way to get this to work, I tried several USB ports on the computer, two USB cables, downloaded the drivers,etc.. If there is not a way to get Make the Cut work, is there a version of Sure Cuts Alot that I might be able to purchase from a third party that would work with Cricut Personal version 1.45?
    Thank you for any help!

  52. Jennifer December 11, 2012 at 1:44 pm #

I have a Cricut personal machine that is using Version 1.45 and have recently purchased SCAL version 2.008 on Ebay since SCAL 3 is not usable with Cricut. I am trying to use SCAL but it keeps giving me the message “Cricut Machine Could not be found. Make sure it is connected and turned on.” I don’t know what to do here? Obviously the Version 1.45 firmware doesn’t work with SCAL version 2.008? Does anyone know??

I just updated SCAL 2 and then my expression and it worked wonderful.
It hung up on “checking cartridge” but I realized I hadn’t powered down after the updates.
I powered of my E and SCAL 2 and

    it works!!!

Thank you for posting to give me the courage.
(I needed the update so my Gypsy would work)

I have been reading so many forums on SCAl and the cricut expression, weather or not it will work! I am looking to but the expression, if I buy it now will it work with scal or does no cricut work? And if the expression does work, is the black version the same?? I’m so confused… Does SCAL only work for ppl who perchased the expression before the lawsuits??
Thank you for any advise you can give me…:-)

    Great :(

I have used this site for a lot of svg information. I have Sure Cuts A Lot 2.044 MAC version and an iMac with intel processor and a Cricut Expression that HAD firmware 2.34. I really wanted to try the Cricut Craft Room and read this post and went ahead and updated my Cricut firmware to 2.43 I cut something in the Cricut Craftroom and it worked great. Then I closed that and opened my Sure Cuts A Lot 2 and tried to cut an image I had created. My Sure Cuts A Lot told me it could not find my machine.. GRRRRRR I really trusted the information I found here and am going CRAZY not being able to cut with Sure Cuts A Lot anymore… is there a way to downgrade my firmware? Is there a way to get this to work????

    • SVGCuts February 6, 2013 at 2:37 pm #

Suse, keep in mind that this article was dated November 2011, we have no control over what Cricut does with the machine and cannot guarantee that things won’t change. Try going into your Preferences for SCAL and hitting the Reset to Default button and then restarting your computer!

      • Suse February 8, 2013 at 8:33 am #

OMG!!! YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER!!
I did what you asked and it WORKED!!!!!!
I am so happy, and you are right, i had not looked at the date of the posts. I am so sorry and I completely bow down to your ingeniousness and help. PLEASE EVERYONE: THEY ARE RIGHT – IT WORKED!!

        • Carol February 9, 2013 at 10:38 pm #

Nevermind it worked!! For some reason it worked the third I tried it and the mat was unloaded before hitting the cut button. Maybe I’m crazy, but it worked so thanks and sorry about the earlier post!

  60. Carol February 9, 2013 at 10:33 pm #

I also mistakenly upgraded my firmware to V2.43 and now SCAL won’t work. I’m a windows user and tried the advice given to Suse who has a MAC and it quite unfortunately didn’t work. I have a cricut expression and I’m so heartbroken SCAL isn’t working. Any other possible things I can do to downgrade the firmware or somehow get it to work. Please, I’m so desparate! Thanks!

    • julie February 18, 2013 at 7:40 pm #

      Carol,
your v2.43 should definitely work with SCAL 2. I have V2.43 with no problems at all!

  61. Lynn March 15, 2013 at 3:38 pm #

I can run SCAL 2 from my PC to my Cricut Expression 2.35, but now I’m trying to get the same results from my lap top.
I need to get off the family PC and move out of the kitchen! I have SCAL on my lap top and I’ve done the USB download so it should work, but after I click on “Cutter” then “Cut with Cricut” I get a pop up saying “you must be using Expression 2.1 or 2.3″, which I am so I click OK and the next pop up says “Starting Connection.” And that’s where it ends! The screen just freezes there and I have to ctl-alt-del to shut it all down.
I’ve asked for help on other sites before finding this one and people just “yell” at me in capital letters that SCAL no longer works on Cricut.
I would be so grateful for any suggestions! I gotta’ get my lap top to work with my Cricut and out of the kitchen! Thanks!!!!!!!

  64. Marilyn April 20, 2013 at 8:22 am #

I have read that CraftRoom can now be linked to cartridges that have already been linked on a Gypsy. (Previously you had to physically put the cart in your Cricut to cut with CCR if the cart had already been linked to your Gypsy. This change allows you to link your carts to CCR so you can cut without having to stick a cart in each time.)

Anyway, it requires a whole bunch of updates from PC. Has anyone with a Gypsy and SCAL done this? Does SCAL still work?

  65. Alishia May 6, 2013 at 11:27 am #

    Marilyn,
YES! I have successfully updated my CCR software and gypsy and gone through the linking to CCR process. I was scared because I read about so many having problems but mine went extremely quick and I didn’t have any problems. I now have cut from my linked gypsy, CCR, and SCAL 2 without problems. If your firmware is current enough, you do not have to update your machine (I did not so I don’t have the newest firmware). When I did do a firmware update to my E a few months ago, it did give me some problems initially opening SCAL2 the first time but I closed the program and restarted my computer and then it was fine. Hope this helps someone!

  66. Bev May 28, 2013 at 6:47 am #

so can someone please confirm that scal will still work with 2.43 on the ecpression

  67. Crystal June 28, 2013 at 10:45 am #

I have a cricut expression v2.43 and use my cartridges with my CCR a lot but I want to do a kk font and/or a vine monogram etc. I work with vinyl a lot so anything that will help me with decals and monograms will be great! Will SCAL 2 do this for me and work with my cricut? If so how do I get it? I have windows 7 on my laptop computer. Thanks!

  68. Shelley July 11, 2013 at 1:22 pm #

    Doesn’t work for me!!!

  69. Shelley July 11, 2013 at 1:35 pm #

    SHOCKED I got it working!!!!

    • Mayan February 15, 2014 at 1:13 am #

How did you get it to work? I have a cricut expression with the updated firmware (2.43) and I recently reformatted my laptop so I had to re-download and install SCAL 2 (2.044). Now every time I try to cut something, I always get “connection error”. I already tried all the suggestions above (restore to default setting, restart computer, etc) with no success. I feel bad that I can’t get SCAL to cut on my Cricut Expression since I had already purchased other SVG files from other sites.

  70. Laurie July 21, 2013 at 12:30 pm #

    I have SCAL 2.030
    Cricut Expression w/2.31
Very nervous… I’m updating my firmware while I type in effort to try use CCR. Losing SCAL is not worth the minimal benefits of CCR for me, I hope this works!

  71. Laurie July 21, 2013 at 1:06 pm #

Success!!! A few anxiety filled moments… got the “SCAL can’t find my machine” error message the fist time I tried, but I powered down my cricut, restarted my computer, powered my cricut back up and whala, I was able to cut an image in SCAL. I also and loaded my whooping library of three cricut cartridges (shows how much I really use SCAL) and cut something form CCR too! So excited!!!

    • Chessa February 15, 2014 at 2:44 pm #

So you are able to cut with firmware 2.43 on scal 2.030? I am looking into buying a old expression to use with my scal but need the assurance it will work! When you go to cut what option do you choose? It doesn’t give the option for 2.4?

  72. Barbara July 22, 2013 at 2:41 pm #

I have Cricut Personal and upgraded to 1.45 in CCR. How can I change my firmware to be able to use SCAL2?

    • Victoria September 23, 2013 at 8:34 am #

Barbara, I had that issue too. I’d updated firmware on Personal to 1.45 last year, and then bought SCAL2 (v2.030) recently without looking into whether it would work with my firmware version. Once I powered on the Cricut machine and saw the 1.45 I was afraid it wouldn’t work. But I’m on a new laptop because my old one committed suicide recently, and I hadn’t gotten around to re-installing Craft Room. Once I installed the driver from inside SCAL2, (Help, Install USB Driver), I did a test an it cut right away. So my theory is that the problem is with Craft Room. If you have Craft Room on your machine, try shutting it down completey first (some others have commented that that did the trick for them). If that doesn’t work, try uninstalling Craft Room, or using Scal2 on a dfferent computer that does not have Craft Room installed, if you have access to one. Hope this helps! (I know you posted several months ago, so hopefully you already found your solution, but just I replied in case you hadn’t or in case others have this issue.)

    I have SCAL 2 Version 2.044
and Expression with firmware version 2.35

I use my SCAL everyday !! I am so nervous on trying to use the Cricut Craft Room

HAs anyone had any issues? Or was it a success??

I have version 2.43 on my cricut. I use scal 2 and ccr no problem.

      • susan hall November 11, 2013 at 5:09 pm #

        Jo,
Which version of SCAL are you running? My cricut is 2.34 and my SCAL version 2 is 2.044. I want to use CCR but I need to upgrade my firmware and I am scared to death.
        Thanks

    • susan hall November 11, 2013 at 5:11 pm #

When I tried to use CCR I got a message saying I had to update my cricut. I panicked. Did not upgrade.

I just purchased a cricut mini and love it, but am not at all excited about the cartridges costing $50ea! I was excited to hear about SCAL but then the lawsuit ruined it! Is there any 3rd party software I can but that will work with my mini now? Or am I stuck with the ccartridges only? Where would I buy an older version of SCAL? I did already download the ccr since that’s what came with the machine and I was naive. Help please! Looking forward to feedback!

  76. Marla November 17, 2013 at 6:29 pm #

I am wanting to create interlocking monograms on vinyl. I have a friend that is willing to sell me her cricut expression. From the research that I have done and friends that have older cricuts, scal was the only way to do this. I see that scal software is available on amazon. What do I need to know if this combination will work for what I need to do? I obviously am new to the cricut world! Thanks for any information!

    • SVGCuts November 18, 2013 at 6:31 pm #

SCAL 2 for the Cricut is no longer available. Versions online are pirated. Buyer beware!

  77. Paul February 27, 2014 at 12:54 pm #

Will SCAL2 work on the Cricut Create with firmware version 1.5?

    • Susan May 19, 2014 at 2:56 pm #

I own scal2 and the packaging says it will work with cricut create v1.51 or 1.54.

  78. Melanie May 4, 2014 at 8:09 am #

    Hi!

I am running v 2.43 firmware on my Expression and have SCAL v 2.044, and I’m using a Mac … I’ve tried all of the suggestions above (restoring defaults, restarting computer, restarting cricut, etc.) and nothing is working! It keeps saying “An error occurred while trying to cut”. What might I be doing wrong?

  79. erica May 4, 2014 at 4:31 pm #

where can i get de cut a lot 2.044 ??

  80. Marilyn May 11, 2014 at 5:31 am #

I have a cricut exp. and am not connected to ccr. I am waiting on a scal2 that I found through e-bay.Will I be able to load this program on my laptop and use svg files for cutting with my cricut exp.? I have only used the cricut cartridges before. Kinda want to broaden my abilities with card making. Please tell me I did not waste 88.00. Thank You in advance for a quick response.

    • SVGCuts May 13, 2014 at 10:55 am #

The SCAL 2 you purchased is likely pirated so it may or may not work. We don’t recommend purchasing SCAL 2 at this time as 99% are pirated.

  81. Marilyn May 13, 2014 at 5:22 pm #

Thank you for your prompt response. How is it that e-bay would allow them to sell pirated software? This was listed as New and in a sealed package. I have not received it yet but I think if it is in fact pirated software I am reporting them to e-bay.

    • SVGCuts May 21, 2014 at 11:52 am #

eBay cannot keep up with it, nor do they do anything about it. We’ve tried to report it multiple times.

  82. Jeannine Huffer May 20, 2014 at 11:30 am #

I’m using a Cricut Explore also. Cut’s svg great but I’m having trouble keeping the score lines in the proper place when I resize. Working on the crib card. My machine has the scoring ability I tried to change to that, but it didn’t work well but the lines being in the wrong place is a bigger problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

    • Jeannine Huffer May 20, 2014 at 1:25 pm #

I just went back to the tutorial and of course they had explained everything very well. I was so intent on just downloading I didn’t pay attention to the part about scoring. Everything worked perfectly. My first try, the scoring isn’t deep enough but you do have a definite line to make it very easy to just do a little extra hand scoring. The cut is great no problems there at all. Thanks for the tutorial Leo, I just need to be patient and work with it.

Hello. This is my first trip to your website as I just found out that I was selected as the challenge winner over at Fantabulous Cricut. I won $50 of your cuts but have no idea how to use them. I have an old version of SCAL but have used it very little and some time ago. Any help at all as to where to go next would be appreciated. You may email me. Thanks so much for the chance to win your product.
