So, sometimes I get a file that I've made in Inkscape, and go to import it into SCAL, and it either has an error, or nothing shows up.  Then I open the file in Inkscape again, select all, copy, and paste it into a new file.  I save it under a different name, and now it works fine with SCAL.  What am I doing wrong in the first place?

I feel I don't have a clear understanding of the procedures you follow.  I work on a Mac and tended to have more problems than people on PC.  I learned that if I make a new element, you must go to "path" and select "combine" even if you are not combining it with anything.  Try a simple design and see if that works.  Good luck!

We don't become Southern; we're born that way!

I'd rather be at the beach. Some beach, somewhere.

Okay, for example, yesterday I made a megaphone .svg file for Jeannie.  She replied that it wouldn't open in SCAL for her, and when I tried it on my own computer, I couldn't import it to SCAL either.  I opened the original file in Inkscape, didn't change anything, just copied the megaphone, and pasted it into a new Inkscape file, and saved it under a new name.  Now it works.  It doesn't make sense to me.

Okay, I don't know anything about Inkscape since I use Illustrator. There were a BUNCH of layers that had nothing to do with the SVG, that's likely why SCAL doesn't understand it.

I removed the layers and it worked fine.

Just FYI to anyone that downloads this SVG, it is not an SVGCuts.com designed SVG.

Yes, I noticed the same problem myself. I would go back to Inkscape and save it as "plain SVG" and it would work. Interesting... Maybe it's just a minor bug or something. I now try to remember to save my SVGs as "plain SVG" or test it on SCAL before saving it.
